What does "semicolon" mean in programming?

semicolon is one of the most common terms in software development. This guide explains what it means, how it is used in practice, and why it matters, with real examples from the developer world.

Definition

The ; character. In C, Java, and many other languages it terminates a statement. In JavaScript it is optional (automatic semicolon insertion exists), but many style guides require it. In CSS it separates declarations.

Example

"const x = 5; // semicolon ends the statement"
