What does "scope" mean in programming?

scope is one of the most common terms in software development. This guide explains what it means, how it is used in practice, and why it matters, with real examples from the developer world.

Definition

The region of code where a variable or function is accessible. Variables declared inside a function are local to that function's scope. Variables declared at the top level have global scope.

Example

"The variable is out of scope outside the function where it was declared."
