What does "observability" mean in programming?

observability is one of the most common terms in software development. This guide explains what it means, how it is used in practice, and why it matters, with real examples from the developer world.

Definition

The ability to understand the internal state of a system from its external outputs — logs, metrics, and traces. A highly observable system makes it easy to diagnose production problems without deploying new code.

Example

"Good observability means you can answer 'what is happening right now?' by looking at dashboards and logs."
