What does "accessibility" mean in programming?

accessibility is one of the most common terms in software development. This guide explains what it means, how it is used in practice, and why it matters, with real examples from the developer world.

Definition

The degree to which a product can be used by people with disabilities — visual, motor, and cognitive. Implemented through semantic HTML, ARIA attributes, keyboard navigation, and sufficient color contrast. Often abbreviated as a11y.

Example

"Screen readers need semantic HTML to work — accessibility requires proper heading structure and alt text on images."
