What does "block" mean in programming?

block is one of the most common terms in software development. This guide explains what it means, how it is used in practice, and why it matters, with real examples from the developer world.

Definition

A group of statements enclosed in curly braces { } that is treated as a single unit. Blocks define the body of functions, if statements, loops, and other control structures. Variables declared inside a block are scoped to it.

Example

"if (isValid) { const result = process(); return result; } // the braces form a block"
