What does "alerting" mean in programming?
alerting is one of the most common terms in software development. This guide explains what it means, how it is used in practice, and why it matters, with real examples from the developer world.
Definition
Automated notifications sent to engineers when a metric crosses a threshold or an anomaly is detected. Alerts wake up the on-call engineer when something needs immediate attention. Good alerting is actionable and specific; bad alerting is noisy and causes alert fatigue.

"We have an alert that fires when error rate exceeds 1% for 5 minutes. It pages the on-call engineer via PagerDuty."
