English for Google and FAANG Interviews: The Complete Guide for LATAM Developers

September 17, 2026

How to prepare your English for Google, Meta, Amazon and other FAANG interviews. Coding interview, system design and behavioral vocabulary in English.

Key Takeaways

  • FAANG interviews in English have three distinct types: coding, system design, and behavioral.
  • In the coding interview, thinking out loud in English is as important as the solution itself.
  • System design interviews require a specific vocabulary: throughput, latency, sharding, and consistency.
  • The STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) is the expected structure for behavioral questions.
  • 4-6 weeks of focused practice on interview English is enough for most B1 developers.

What makes an English interview at FAANG different

Thinking out loud

The coding interview in English: how to narrate your solution

Let me start by clarifying the constraints...

Empieza siempre aquí. Muestra que piensas antes de codificar.

My initial approach would be a brute-force O(n²) solution, but we can optimize to O(n log n) by...

The edge cases I need to handle are: empty input, negative numbers, and overflow.

Lista los edge cases explícitamente. Los entrevistadores lo valoran.

I'll use a hash map here to trade space for time.

This gives us O(n) time and O(1) space.

Cierra con el análisis de complejidad.

Un tip clave: si no sabes la respuesta, di “Let me think through this for a moment.”

The system design interview in English

LatencyLatenciaWe need P99 latency under 100ms for the API.
ConsistencyConsistenciaStrong consistency guarantees all nodes see the same data.
AvailabilityDisponibilidad99.99% availability means less than an hour of downtime per year.
Partition toleranceTolerancia a particionesCAP theorem: pick two from consistency, availability, partition tolerance.
ShardingFragmentaciónWe can shard the database by user region to distribute load.
ReplicationReplicaciónReplication ensures data is copied across multiple nodes.
Cache invalidationInvalidación de cachéCache invalidation is one of the hardest problems in computer science.
CDNRed de distribución de contenidoA CDN reduces latency by serving assets from edge nodes near the user.
Back-of-the-envelope estimationEstimación rápidaLet me do a quick back-of-the-envelope estimation of the storage requirements.

Frases clave para system design:

"Let's define the requirements first, both functional and non-functional."

"At this scale, a single relational database won't work because..."

"I'd use eventual consistency here because strong consistency isn't required for this use case."

"The trade-off here is between latency and consistency."

"Let me do a quick back-of-the-envelope estimation."

The behavioral interview in English: the STAR method

SSituation

Contexto: ¿Dónde trabajabas? ¿Cuál era el proyecto?

TTask

Tu responsabilidad específica en esa situación.

AAction

Qué hiciste tú (no el equipo). Usa 'I', no 'we'.

RResult

El resultado medible. Siempre termina con datos si puedes.

Example STAR answer: “Tell me about a time you disagreed with your manager.”

S: “In my previous role, we were planning to migrate our API to GraphQL within one sprint.”

T: “I was the lead developer on the migration and had concerns about the timeline.”

A: “I prepared a technical breakdown showing that we needed at least three sprints to avoid introducing regressions. I presented this to my manager with data from a spike we had run.”

R: “We extended the timeline. The migration launched with zero critical bugs. My manager later said it was the right call.”

The 10 most common FAANG questions and how to answer them in English

1. “Tell me about yourself.

Keep it under 2 minutes. Current role, relevant experience, why FAANG interests you.

2. “Why do you want to work at [company]?

Be specific. Research their products, tech stack, or engineering blog.

3. “Tell me about a time you disagreed with your manager.

Use STAR. Show you can disagree respectfully and commit to the decision.

4. “Describe a project you led end to end.

Focus on your decisions, trade-offs made, and measurable results.

5. “Tell me about a technical failure and what you learned.

Be honest. Interviewers value self-awareness and the ability to learn.

6. “What is your greatest technical challenge?

Pick a real challenge that shows depth. Explain the technical constraints clearly.

7. “How do you handle ambiguous requirements?

Show that you ask clarifying questions and align with stakeholders early.

8. “Design a URL shortener.

Start with requirements, then API, database schema, and scalability trade-offs.

9. “Find two numbers in an array that sum to a target.

Brute force is O(n²). Hash map approach is O(n). Explain the trade-off.

10. “Where do you see yourself in five years?

Show ambition aligned with the role. Leadership and technical depth are both valid.

She built Lingua-e so other developers wouldn't have to take the long road to feel confident working in an international development environment.
