What does "question mark" mean in programming?

question mark is one of the most common terms in software development. This guide explains what it means, how it is used in practice, and why it matters, with real examples from the developer world.

Definition

The ? character. In TypeScript it marks optional properties and parameters (name?: string). The ternary operator uses ? to separate the condition from the true branch. In URLs it starts the query string.

Example

"function greet(name?: string) {} // ? makes the parameter optional"
