What does "origin" mean in programming?

origin is one of the most common terms in software development. This guide explains what it means, how it is used in practice, and why it matters, with real examples from the developer world.

Definition

The default name Git gives to the remote repository a project was cloned from. When you run git push or git pull without specifying a remote, Git uses origin by default.

Example

"Run git push origin main to push your changes to the default remote."
