What does "local" mean in programming?

local is one of the most common terms in software development. This guide explains what it means, how it is used in practice, and why it matters, with real examples from the developer world.

Definition

Running on your own machine rather than on a remote server. Local development lets you make changes quickly without deploying. 'Run it locally' means starting the application on your computer.

Example

"Run the app locally with docker compose up before pushing your changes."
