What does "CRUD" mean in programming?

CRUD is one of the most common terms in software development. This guide explains what it means, how it is used in practice, and why it matters, with real examples from the developer world.

Definition

An acronym for the four basic operations on persistent data: Create, Read, Update, Delete. Most APIs and database-backed features are described as CRUD operations. REST maps CRUD to HTTP methods: POST (create), GET (read), PUT/PATCH (update), DELETE (delete).
