What does "coupling" mean in programming?

coupling is one of the most common terms in software development. This guide explains what it means, how it is used in practice, and why it matters, with real examples from the developer world.

Definition

The degree to which one module depends on another. High coupling makes code hard to change because modifying one module can break others. The goal is loose coupling: modules that interact through stable interfaces and know little about each other's internals.

Example

"Direct database calls in the UI layer create high coupling — introduce a service layer to decouple them."
